Mike Echols
October 8, 1958 - May 31, 2013
Carl Michael “Mike” Echols, 54, passed away Friday, May 31, 2013 in Throckmorton. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at the Smith Family Funeral Home Chapel in Throckmorton with Bro. Floyd Patterson and Bro. Peter Parker officiating. Interment will take place immediately following at Throckmorton Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes. Visitation is planned for Monday evening, June 3 from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mike was born October 8, 1958 in Seymour, Texas to Helen Francelle (Underwood) and Carl Madison (Buster) Echols. Mike attended schools in Megargel and Goree. He graduated from Goree High School in 1977 where he was a standout athlete in football, track, golf, and basketball. After completing a year at Vernon Jr. College, he returned home to work in the oil field industry. Mike worked at Pumper Supply in Knox City, G&L Tools and Basic Energy. He eventually began his own business in Bridgeport completing oil and gas wells and a hot shot business.

When Mike wasn’t working he loved to spend time at the lake and fish. He also loved playing golf and when he couldn’t play he would watch on TV. Mike moved to Throckmorton 3 ½ years ago to be near his parents and sister and receive necessary medical treatments. He battled his illness with dignity, strength, and never a complaint. Mike was at peace because he loved and trusted the Lord. He was an amazing father, son, grandfather, brother, and uncle.

Mike is preceded in death by his grandparents, Dewey and Addie Underwood and Jim and Allie Echols; uncles, Bill Echols, J.C. Echols, and W.H. Echols; aunts, Thelma Howe, Mary Ellen Malone, and Mae Thomas.

He is survived by his sons, Jacob Echols and wife Stephanie of Junction City, Kansas and Caleb Echols of Washington, D.C.; daughter, Mikah Echols and her son Alex of Springtown, Texas; parents, Buster and Francelle Echols of Throckmorton; sister, Carla Dormier of Throckmorton; nephews, Josh and Jeff Dormier of Throckmorton; nieces, Susan Dormier of Throckmorton and Sarah Dormier of Lubbock; great-nephews Zach Hare of Throckmorton and Little Johnnie Dormier of San Antonio and other family and friends.

Serving as pallbearers are Gus Dormier, Doug Wilkinson, Dickie Patterson, Johnny Gibson, James Howe, and Billy Harris.
