We have the keys to the Goree School!!!

We have taken an assessment of the condition of the school and there is much work to be done before our first BIG event. The Cotton Pickin' Quilt Show is ON for February 2010 hosted by the GGG, Going for Greatness in Goree Group. Our theme is 'Old School' with a fifties flare. But, there is MUCH to do:

• The old gym was a storage room for the school and stuff must be moved or trashed. There is a literal computer graveyard.


• Several rooms do not have carpet, in the event we even need them for this event.


• Water fountain needs to be replaced in hallway.


• Clean, clean, clean...everywhere.


• System developed for hanging the guide wires and wooden stands for the quilts.


• Kitchen revamped for the homemade meal to be served in the "Cotton Pickin' Cafe". Tables and chairs moved from various places on campus.


• Sixty-six volunteers to cook: 22 pans of chicken spagetti, 22-fruit salads, 22-desserts


• Food Serving Team


• Decorating Team


• Marketing Team


• The Quilt Guild has offered to do the hospitality room for the vendors and they have offered to 'handle' the quilts.


• The Munday Chamber has offered to make the goody sacks.


• We have 17 vendors signed up.


• And quilts, quilts, quilts to enter in the show at $2.00 entry fee each.

Lois Faye Myers, 57, a rural mail carrier, of Joshua, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, in Fort Worth.

Funeral: 2 p.m. Tuesday at The Church at Burleson. Interment: Burleson Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Mountain Valley Funeral Home.

Lois was born June 4, 1952, in Haskell to Arthur and Ollie Lee Hargrove. She was a loving wife, mother and Nan. Lois loved her family and grandchildren and their events. She also loved being outside, drinking coffee on the front porch, sewing and cooking. Her home was always open to all.

Lois was preceded by her parents; son, David Eric Myers, in 2000; and four brothers.

Survivors: Husband, Dudley Myers of Joshua; daughters, Kristy Maniscalco and husband, David, of Simonton, Becky Akin and husband, Gabe, of Burleson, Misti Varnell and husband, Chad, of Burleson, Caren Kline and husband, Larry, of Mansfield; brother, Eddie Hargrove and wife, Patty, of Bedford; grandchildren, Anna, Jonathan, Mariah, Kadyn, Corbin, Justin, Billy, Preston, Seth, Ethan, Claire; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

DORSE DEAN BLANKENSHIP

Dorse Dean Blankenship, age 78, of Olney, Texas, died Friday, December 11, 2009, in Olney. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 14, 2009, at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Carpenter, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the Goree Cemetery under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home.

Mr. Blankenship was born April 18, 1931 in Sunset, Texas to the late Porter and Ina (McGregor) Blankenship. He graduated from Goree High School in 1949. He served as a corporal in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 and was assigned to the 351st infantry unit in Triest, Italy. He and Mary Joyce Jones were married November 8, 1957 in Seymour, Texas. She preceded him in death on October 28, 2001. Dorse was a farmer in Baylor and Knox counties for 30 years. He moved to Olney from Seymour, Texas in 1979 and worked for Olney ISD in the maintenance department for 13 years. He was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the Olney Masonic Lodge No. 790 A.F. and A.M. He served as a worthy patron of the Eastern Star and was a past commander of the V.F.W. Post 3906.

Dorse was preceded in death by one daughter, Joy Elaine Moore, on December 26, 2005. Survivors include one daughter, Tina White and husband Brian of Fort Worth, Texas; son-in-law, Ben Moore of San Antonio, Texas; one brother, Bobby Blankenship of Goree, Texas; one sister, Bertha Mae Wright and husband, Wesley, of Midland, Texas; and one granddaughter, Brandi Moore Allen, and husband Forrest of Seattle, Washington.

Memorials may be made to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 756, Olney, Texas 76374, or the American Diabetes Association, 2315 North Main, Suite 320, Fort Worth, Texas 76106. Goree School

Hello Hometown,

Just wanted to drop you all a quick note and ‘officially’ announce that the school in Goree has been donated back to the City of Goree for public use. We appreciate Robert Dillard and the School Board for their cooperation and for giving us the opportunity to better our hometown.

If we do not utilize these facilities, then the upkeep, insurance and maintenance could hurt rather than help us. A Townhall Meeting is in the making. Thank you for your continued support and ideas.

Gary Nemec, 65, died Saturday, October 10, 2009 at Anson General Hospital. A memorial service with military honors will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 16, 2009 at Adams-Graham Funeral Home Chapel, 732 Ave I.

Born June 24, 1944 in Elk Rapids, Michigan, Gary was a son of Joseph Nemec and Lena (Bolts) Kortanek. He was a U. S. Air Force and Army Veteran. Gary married Joyce Beaty on September 7, 1968 in Goree, TX. and was employed by U-Haul from 1985 to 2002. He was a self employed small engine repairman and a Baptist.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife Joyce Nemec of Hawley; one son, LCDR Terry Nemec, USN (and wife, Sheila) of Poulsbo, WA; two brothers, David and Paul Nemec of Boyne City, MI; two sisters, Liz McDermott of East Jordan, MI., and Jody Nichlas of Grand Rapids, MI.; two grandchildren, Gerritt and Anezka Nemec.

Joyce Dean Wier Therwhanger passed away September 20, 2009 at Legends Health Care in Midland, Texas. She was born August 23, 1932 in Knox City to Dean and Claudia Wier. She was raised on a farm in Munday and went to school in Goree. She attended Midwestern University in Wichita Falls and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Munday, Texas. She married Billy H. Therwhanger on October 27, 1950.

Joyce is survived by one brother, Jerry Dan Chamberlain; and three sons: Randy Therwhanger of Midland; Lindy Therwhanger and wife Jennifer of Midland; Terry Therwhanger and wife Teresa of Lamesa; seven grandchildren: Chelsie Therwhanger, Colby Therwhanger and wife Danielle, Lauren Goldsmith and husband Derek, Brannon Therwhanger, Shelli Scott and husband Sheyeene, Megan Therwhanger, Matthew Jordan; one great-grandson, Cannon Scott, and one great-granddaughter Julianna Jae. She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Johnny Chamberlain; and one brother, Billy Royce Weir.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at Johnson Memorial Cemetery in Munday, Texas with Jim Limbacher officiating. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Legends Health Care and Hospice of Midland for their loving care of Joyce during her illness.
