SEYMOUR — Myra Jenette “Jennie” Reed, age 73, passed away Monday, June 20, 2011 at her residence in Seymour. Funeral services will be held at 10 A.M. Thursday, June 23, 2011, at the First Baptist Church in Seymour, with Dr. David Warren, pastor, and Wayne Sharp officiating. Interment will be in the Brushy Cemetery near Goree, Tx., under the direction of Seymour Memorial Funeral Home.

Mrs. Reed was born July 23, 1937 in Wichita Falls, Texas, to Luther and Bear Gray Williams. She married Lloyd Reed on June 27, 1953 in Goree, Texas.

She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Lloyd Reed of Seymour, Texas; by three daughters, Carla Engels and husband, John of Greeley, Colorado, Kim Deisher and husband, David of Keller, Texas, and Robin Shane of Burleson, Texas; by 8 grandchildren, Stephen Sims, Robby Blush, Jamie Oliva, Andrew Sims, Brittany Deisher, Wesley Deisher, Tyler Shane and Dylan Shane; and by 7 Great-grandchildren, Chandler, Wyatt and Landry Sims, Addison and Brianna Blush, and Vaughn and Marcus Oliva.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Doris Putman, and a daughter, Donna Kay Sims.

A visitation will be held at 6 P.M. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

The family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society or to the First Baptist Church in Seymour.

Eva Warren, 96 a resident of Pine Tree Assisted Living in Paris, Texas, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2011.

Funeral services will be 10:00A.M. Sat., April 30, 2011 in the Church of Christ of Honey Grove, Texas. Mr. Preston Boles and Mr. Roger Dawdy will officiate. Pallbearers serving will be family members. Burial will follow at Goree Cemetery in Goree, Texas. The family will receive friends from 9 to 10A.M. Sat. April 30, 2011, at the church prior to services.

Eva E. Warren was born Oct. 19, 1914 in Goree, Texas to parents, Edward A. Jones and Claudia Elizabeth Edwards Jones. She attended Hefner and Goree schools. After graduation in 1932, she continues her education at North Texas State University. She started teaching at Hefner Rural School. For the next seven years, she taught in the winters and attended North Texas in the summers. She also taught in various positions in the Goree public school before her retirement in 1978.

She was a longtime faithful member of the Church of Christ, worshiping in Goree, Selfs, Honey Grove, and Paris. Her family brought much joy to her. She loved cooking, sewing, quilting, and playing games, especially Chinese Checkers with the great grandchildren. She always had a wonderful smile that cheered those around her.

She married Elkin B. Warren Sept. 17, 1939 in Frederick, OK. and after 59 years of marriage before his death Feb. 2, 1998. Along with her loving husband she was preceded in death by her parents, son in law, Sammy Dobbs, sister, Lila Faye Mobley and two brothers, Clarence and Paul Jones.

They are survived by two daughters, Claudia and Roger Dawdy of Holly Lake, TX; and Fran Dobbs of Honey Grove, TX; Three granddaughters, Kristy and Eric Howell of Argyle, TX; April and Preston Boles of Honey Grove, TX; and Stacy and Randy Barnes of North Richland Hills, TX. Nine Great Grandchildren, JonAaron, Kyleb, Kason, and Julia Howell, Luke and Kendall Boles, Hudson, Easton, and Greyson Barnes.

Patsy Stout Cooper passed from this life to eternity in heaven on Saturday, April 16, 2011. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 3:00 p.m., at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Ulrey, officiating. Burial will be in the Cache Creek Cemetery under the direction of Archer Funeral Home, Seymour, Texas. Visitation will be from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m., Monday, April 18, 2011 at the funeral home. Patsy was born in the family home southwest of Seymour on January 16, 1929 to Lowe L and Mary Alice Robertson Stout. She attended a one room school, Miller Creek School for two years and transferred to a two teacher school, Mary’s Creek school for four years. She graduated from Seymour High School. Patsy graduated from Texas Tech University in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics. She taught Home Economics in Sonora, Megargel, Olney and Goree. She returned to college and received her Master’s in Library Science in 1971 from East Texas State University. She became librarian at Seymour High School and later Seymour Elementary, as well. She retired after 35 years of teaching; then returned to Goree Schools as a part-time librarian. Mrs. Cooper sponsored FHA trips, class activities and senior trips. Juniors and Seniors benefitted from her research expertise while writing term papers. She loved those high school students. Cooper, Mama Pat, or Aunt Patsy had a life long love for her family and community. She was an active member of the Baylor County Historical Commission, serving as president. She helped collect information and write “Salt Port to Sirloin, Volumes I and II” and “Latchstrings”. She renewed interest in homecoming for Seymour Ex-Students beginning in 1976. She served on the nominations committee for the Seymour Old Settlers Reunion. She served and encouraged others to do the same. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. She was a past member of the Classroom Teachers Association and a lifetime member of TSTA/NEA. She served as an officer in both. Patsy received the Seymour Chamber of Commerce 1986 Friend of Seymour and 1989 Citizen of the Year. She was an honorary Chapter Farmer for Seymour FFA. Patsy Stout married Raymond Cooper of Sonora. They divorced. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lowe and Mary Alice Stout; an infant brother, William Frank; an infant daughter, Phyllis Jo; and an older brother, Jack Stout. She is survived by a daughter, Alice Ruth and husband, Laron Peters of Gothenburg, NE; a granddaughter, Lizette Alice and husband, Mike Dahlgren of Lincoln, NE; a grandson, Levi Zach Peters of Lincoln, NE. Other survivors include three sisters, Jo Alice Stout of Munday, Betty Lynn Stout Styles of Seymour, and Trixie Stout Holt of Gruver, Texas; a brother, Jimmy Stout and wife, Jo Rozelle of Seymour; and a sister-in-law, Anne Stout of Seymour. KNOX CITY — Patsy Ruth Lankford, 78, passed away April 2, 2011, in Wichita Falls, Texas.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at 10 a.m. at the Knox City Cemetery under the directon of Smith Family Funeral Homes, Knox City.
Patsy was born July 13, 1932, in Munday, Texas, to Ezra Pryor and Effie Yeager. She married Jackie Wayne Lankford December 24, 1952. She was retired from the Texas Department of Human Resources in Knox City where she worked as a secretary. She was a longtime resident of Knox City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and nephew Terry Hollar. Patsy is survived by a daughter, Janet Kay Herzog of Wichita Falls; two sons, Michael Wayne Lankford of Round Mountain, and David Lynn Lankford of Knox City; one sister, Marjorie Hollar of Burleson; five grandchildren, Jill King of Wichita Falls, Emily Herzog of Wichita Falls, Douglas Pierce of Norfolk, Va., Audrey Lankford of San Angelo, Sondra Lankford of Lubbock; and one great-grandson, Chaz King of Wichita Falls. Memorials can be given to Hospice of Wichita Falls, Texas, and the Wichita Falls Humane Society.

GOREE, Texas — Roel (Rolly) Ramos, 49, died Thursday, February 24, 2011, in Forth Worth, Texas.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2011, in Goree Cemetery under the direction of McCauley-Smith Funeral Home.

Rolly was born January 4, 1962, in Knox City, Texas. He graduated from Goree High School and was a cook.

Survivors: two brothers, Manuel D. Ramos of Yucca Valley, California, and Art Ramos of Abilene, Texas; three sisters, Connie Reyes of Watauga, Texas, Molly Shires of North Richland Hills, Texas, and Gloria Ramos of Fort Worth, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation for family and friends was Monday at the funeral home at 6 p.m.

Jerry Brooks Massey, age 73, of Houston, Texas passed away Thursday, July 7th in Houston, Texas. Jerry was born in Goree, Texas on December 15, 2010, the daughter of Lee Roy Brooks and Lucy Mathews Brooks. Jerry graduated from Goree High School in 1955. She married Jimmy Roy Massey of Munday, Texas on September 23, 1955.

A memorial service will be held Friday, July 16th at 10 AM at Edgemere Church of Christ.
Jerry was a homemaker until her youngest child started school. Jerry was employed by Best Products and the State of Texas in the Department of Human Services.

Jerry was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Lisa Lou and son Jimmy Roy, Jr.
Jerry is survived by her husband Jimmy Roy Massey, her daughter Phyllis Massey and son Scott Massey in Houston, Texas.

This is Phyllis Massey, Jerry's daughter.

My mom passed away today in Houston. She was hospitalized last Thursday with a blood clot in her lung and fluid in and around her lungs. She had a stoke yesterday. She had been fighting liver cancer for over a year.

We will probably have a memorial in Wichita Falls some time next week.

Guess Who...

...walked into the Goree Bank/Drug Store today? Keith Chamberlain...and this is what he said on facebook, of all places:

I asked Tammie for a withdrawal and then, a milk shake. The answer to both was a firm 'nope' and I was handed a red plastic cup of ice water. Can you believe that, a Bank with three safes and a Drug Store??? She did inform me that I could make a deposit. A short time ago, only fifty-five years, I drank one of the best ever milk shakes in that very room.

Now, if you do visit the Goree Bank/Drug Store, one thing you do get is excellent hospitality and interesting conversation. Nancy and I really enjoyed visiting with Tammie and the pretty young lady, Caroline Garcia, working with her today. Also they have done a fantastic job restoring the old building. You really need to see it to appreciate the work that has been done.

Now to let you in on something that I figured out after a tour around the building and seeing all the improvements and reconditioning. Money has to come from somewhere. If you are in Goree and need to make a withdrawal, go to the old Trainham Grocery building, now an ice plant, and look up Kent. I doubt you can get a loaf of bread, can of beans or package of potato chips, but Tammie has to be making 'withdrawals' somewhere, so ask Kent.

Joyce Dean Wier Therwhanger passed away September 20, 2009 at Legends Health Care in Midland, Texas. She was born August 23, 1932 in Knox City to Dean and Claudia Wier. She was raised on a farm in Munday and went to school in Goree. She attended Midwestern University in Wichita Falls and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Munday, Texas. She married Billy H. Therwhanger on October 27, 1950.

Joyce is survived by one brother, Jerry Dan Chamberlain; and three sons: Randy Therwhanger of Midland; Lindy Therwhanger and wife Jennifer of Midland; Terry Therwhanger and wife Teresa of Lamesa; seven grandchildren: Chelsie Therwhanger, Colby Therwhanger and wife Danielle, Lauren Goldsmith and husband Derek, Brannon Therwhanger, Shelli Scott and husband Sheyeene, Megan Therwhanger, Matthew Jordan; one great-grandson, Cannon Scott, and one great-granddaughter Julianna Jae. She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Johnny Chamberlain; and one brother, Billy Royce Weir.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at Johnson Memorial Cemetery in Munday, Texas with Jim Limbacher officiating. Verna Lee Rawlins, 79, died December 26, 2008 in Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, Texas.

Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday January 2, 2009 at Goree First Baptist Church in Goree, Texas. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at McCauley-Smith Funeral Home in Munday, Texas for family and friends.

Born March 30, 1929 in Goree, Texas. She worked in Munday First National Bank for 30 years. She was a member of Goree Methodist Church.

Survivors: Two nephews: Phil Johnson of Anson, Texas and his daughter Miranda Johnson of Haskell, Texas and David and Lisa Johnson of Eastland, Texas and children Sarah and Tod Gay and Hunter Gay of Eastland, Texas; One Niece: Laura Stovall of Knox City, Texas and her Children: Melissa and Anthony Sayers of Dayton, Ohio; Derek Stovall; Sean Stovall; Heather Stovall and Nicole Stovall, all of Knox City, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; One sister: Jessie Mae Johnson and one infant brother.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Got a request from Jerry (Brooks) Massey (Goree Class of 1955) for someone that lives in the Goree Area who could take a picture of her parents' grave. She is now living in Houston so hopefully someone can send her a picture.

Can you believe it-Goree has a Santa Claus?
I think his name is really Santa Jimmy Claus.

At 12/24/2008 2:47:42 AM Central Standard Time, I sent an email to my Goree Group Email List.

Jimmy Claus, while having his morning cup of coffee, checked his emails. He got up, poured himself another cup of coffee, put on his coat, picked up his camera, and started for the door. His family questioned where he was going so early on Christmas Eve morning in the cold. As he crawled into the old pickup truck, he told them that he had one more gift to get in order to help someone else far away have a brighter, more memorable, Christmas.

With a cold wind blowing, Jimmy Claus walked around in the Goree Cemetery looking for the particular place noted in my email. When he found it, he circled it several times taking pictures, trying to get the best angles.

My vision of Jimmy Claus when he got back in the warm pickup is, while taking a drink of the now cooling coffee, he said a short prayer for all those buried there and their still living families.

Before noon, Jimmy Claus was back in his warm home, had processed the pictures and had emailed them to Jerry in Houston. At 12/24/2008 1:07:46 PM Central Standard Time, Jimmy Claus forwarded me a copy of the pictures.

We can all be sure that Goree still has good people that go out of their way to help with happiness of others. It is still as it was when we lived there.

Thanks Santa Jimmy Claus, you did good!

Golly, there are a lot of Santas in the Goree area offering to help Jerry.

Let's all run down to Jerry's for New Years. She said we could stay with her (see forwarded email). We could have a big New Years party of Goree alumni. Unnn, on second thought, her husband Jimmy, and their daughter might throw us out, maybe better if we go one at a time.

Anyway, a big thank you, to all that offered to take pictures for Jerry.

Betcha there was surprise, excitement, and a few tears when Jerry opened the email from Santa Jimmy on Christmas Eve. Next, bet she called husband Jimmy and their daughter to see the pictures, maybe even called in the dog and cat too.

As my grandkids say, in the olden days, about sixty-five years ago, 1943, Jerry and I were in the first grade and believed in Santa Claus big time. Now we believe again because of Santa Jimmy. Jerry there is a Santa Claus, just this year his name is Santa Jimmy Claus.

Just passing on Jerry's email so you all know that all Goree people are being thought of this Holliday season. Keith

David Norris Fitzgerald of Midland died at Hospice of Midland Memorial Hospital, Wednesday, September 24, 2008.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m., Monday, September 29, at Memorial Christian Church with Rev. Terry Rothermich officiating. A private burial service was held Friday, September 26 at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland.

Born January 25, 1923 in Goree, Texas to Archie and Mamie Fitzgerald, Dave was an outstanding basketball player for the Goree High School Wildcats, staying for a second senior year so that the school could field a team. On September 8, 1942 he married Frances Camille Morrow, in Lubbock. He was a proud World War II veteran, having served across Europe as a dental assistant with the 291st Engineering Combat Battalion.

Dave was a mainstay of the Permian Basin oil business, beginning his career pumping gas, to ultimately owning several companies of his own, including Slough Equipment Company, Melco Blowout Preventer, Pheasant Rubber, Fitzgerald Electric Supply. and Fas-Line Sales and Rentals, to mention a few. He was very active in the Permian Basin International Oil Show, being chosen as the 2004 Oil Show Honoree. He served on the Board of Directors of numerous organizations including Midland National Bank, TMBR/Sharp Drilling Company, and Memorial Christian Church.

Dave was a man of great integrity and generosity, going out of his way to help those in need and serving as a mentor and friend to many. His love of life included his wife, Frances, his children and grandchildren, and his extended family, including many treasured nieces, nephews and cousins. He delighted in spending time with family, whether enjoying this home on Lake Sweetwater, counting cows on his beloved ranch in Nolan County, or touring New York City with his grandchildren. Through the years, Dave and Frances traveled the world with many dear and lasting friends.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Camille Fitzgerald, of Midland; his three daughters and their husbands, Sunnye and John Dinger, of Odessa, Suzanne and Jim Bobo, of Odessa, Lisa and Mike Herring, of Sweetwater; his six grandchildren; Scott Dinger and his wife Amanda; Jeff Dinger and his wife Michelle; Jamie Russell and her husband John; David Bobo and wife Karly; Jon Paul Bobo and wife Amelia; Brittany Jill Kessler; Mark Herring and wife Jill; and Matthew Herring and wife Cindy; twelve great-grandchildren; and sister, Jonelle Patterson.

The family suggests memorials be directed to Hospice of Midland, PO Box 2621, Midland, Texas 79702; Star Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, PO Box 112, Midland, Texas 79702; or Memorial Christian Church, Endowment Fund, 1001 Andrews Highway, Midland, Texas 79701.

Mrs. Radene Turner of New Home departed this life on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, at the age of 80 years. She was born Sept.30, 1927, in Goree, to Rado and Jewel (Gass) Hutchens. Radene attended school in Goree, Draw and she graduated from Tahoka High School in 1945. Mrs. Turner attended Draughns Business College in Lubbock were she received her associate degree in 1947. Radene married Dick Turner in Tahoka on Dec. 23, 1947; he preceded her in death on Oct. 29, 1993, after 46 years of marriage. She was the bookkeeper for New Home Co-op Gin and the New Home city secretary for many years. Radene was an avid baseball and football fan; she loved playing games, especially dominos and crossword puzzles.

Those left to cherish her memory are one daughter, Judy Gandy and husband David of New Home; one son, Dickie Turner and wife Gerry of Crowley; three grandchildren, Kauy Wehe and husband Rodney of Keller, Jason Gandy and wife Meghan of Lubbock and Josh Gandy and wife Paige of Acuff; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Thena Clarke of Ruidoso, N.M.; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Turner was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008, at White Funeral Home in Tahoka.

Celebration of Life Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, at the New Home Baptist Church in New Home with Rev. Kenneth McClung officiating and Rev. Calvin Gray assisting. Interment will follow in the Nevels Memorial Cemetery in Tahoka.

In Loving Memory~Sammy Kelley

Sammy H. Kelley, age 73 of Garland, TX, passed away August 31, 2008. He was born June 24, 1935, in Throckmorton County, TX, to William Henry & Verna Opal (Lewis) Kelley. Mr. Kelley proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He was a Retired Dallas Fire Fighter and a member of California Lane Church of Christ. Mr. Kelley is survived by his daughters: Karie Loftin & husband Jeff of Rowlett, TX, and Kristan Kelley of Garland, TX; sisters: Colleen Sedwick of North Bend, WA, and Paula Roberts of Latham Springs, TX; brothers: Mike Kelley of Latham Springs, TX, Richard Kelley of Tyler, TX, and David Kelley of Arlington, TX; and granddaughter: Kami Kelley of Garland, TX. He was preceded in death by his wife Karen in 2001; and his parents. Funeral services will be held 10:00am, Friday, September 5, 2008, at Rest Haven Funeral Home - Rockwall Chapel with Dr. Aubrey Patterson and David Kelley officiating. Inter- ment will be in Rest Haven Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Thursday evening at the funeral home from 6:00 to 8:00pm.

In Loving Memory~Don Coffman

MUNDAY, Texas — Don Coffman, 75, passed away Tuesday April 22, 2008, in a Haskell County Hospital.

Mr. Coffman was born May 29, 1932, to longtime Knox County residents Ruth (Duke) and Buster Coffman in Goree, Texas. He married Joyce Brockett in Goree, Texas, on April 17, 1954, and they had just celebrated 54 years of marriage. Mr. Coffman was a good neighbor and friend to everyone he touched. A great sense of humor he loved being with all his golfing buddies. He was very active in his community serving on the Goree Producer Gin Coop and the Goree School Board for over 20 years. He also served proudly as a director for the First National Bank of Munday until his retirement in 1998. Mr. Coffman graduated from Goree High School and attended Cisco Jr. College on a football scholarship, and attended Texas A&M also. He was a farmer and rancher in this community for over 50 years. His greatest passion was his grandchildren and he loved going and watching his grandchildren play basketball and other sporting events.

Funeral services will be Thursday, April 24, 2008, at the Munday First United Merthodist Church at 2 p.m. with pastor Gary Hubbard and Adrin Fletcher officiating under the direction of the McCauley-Smith Funeral Home of Munday. Interment will be in the Goree Cemetery in Goree, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife Jo, his Son Mark Coffman and wife Darla of Midland, Daughter Cathy (Coffman) Reeves and husband Bobby of Lubbock, Grandson Kristopher Reeves and Wife Tiffany of Monroe, La., Grandsons Riley and Grant Coffman of Midland. Granddaughter Courtney Reeves of Lubbock and Great-Granddaughter Laken Coffman of Wichita Falls. Also surviving by a Sister Carol Stovall and husband Jimmy of Midland and numerous nieces and nephews.
